Kaunitz-Rietberg
The Princely House of Kaunitz-Rietberg descended
from the ancient Bohemian noble family of Kounic [9: 1834; p.127-129] [4:
tome III; p.75, 85] [10: Band III (1956); t.30].
Friedrich / Bedrich (+1627) and
Leo-Wilhelm / Lev-Vilém (+1655), the sons of Ulrich V /
Oldrich of Kaunitz (+1617), founded, respectively, the Bohemian and Moravian
branches.
In 1642, Leo-Wilhelm (+1655), the founder
of the Moravian branch, received the title of Count in
Bohemia.
In Jan 1683, the Roman Emperor granted the
title of Imperial Count to Dominik-Andreas I (+1705), a son of
Leo-Wilhelm [8: Band 3; p.12].
In 1699, Maximilian-Ulrich of Kaunitz
(+1746), a son of Dominik-Andreas, married Maria-Ernestine-Franziska of East
Frisia (+1758), Countess of the Imperial immediate County of Rietberg
since 1690.
In 1764, the Roman Emperor granted to
Wenzel-Anton-Dominik (+1764), a son of Maximilian-Ulrich and
Maria-Ernestine-Franziska of East Frisia, the title of Prince of Kaunitz
(primogenit.) [8: Band 3; p.12].
In 1797, Dominik-Andreas II (+1705), Count of
Questenberg, the second son of Prince Wenzel-Anton-Dominik of Kaunuitz,
succeeded his childless brother Ernst-Christoph.
In 1803, by the Final Recess of the
Imperial Deputation, the Prince of Kaunitz received an individual voice
in the Council of Princes of the Imperial Diet.
In Aug 1806, with the abdication of the
Roman Emperor, the suzerainty of the Holy Roman Empire over the Prince of
Kaunitz's possessions ended.
In 1807, the Prince of Kaunitz lost his
status of territorial ruler when the County of Rietberg was annexed to the
Kingdom of Westphalia [2: p.154].
In 1848, with the death of Prince
Alois-Wenzel, the Moravian branch of the House of Kaunuitz became extinct
in the male line.
